Yesterday: 19 were shot & wounded at Mother’s Day Parade in New Orleans. Among the victims were 10-year-olds.
I never quite involve my work with politics just because I did’t feel the kind of entitlement to police upon other countries’ policies — most of the time I listen and share. BUT it drives me NUTS to hear little kids get gunned down at school and at Mother’s Day Parades. Gun control is something I don’t have mixed feelngs about, even though I am no citizen of this country.
I can’t vote (or even be sure that I have rights to stay); but I can draw pictures. So I sat down tonight and drew this. Tell me I’m not crazy.

That doesn’t mean the world is comfortable with how I look. Even though I’m a college professor, who works 12-hour days and eats healthy, even though I have none of the diseases constantly reported in the media as linked to obesity, I’m up against quite a few stereotypes as an overweight blond female artist. I’m constantly fighting strangers’ criticisms that I am lazy and slow-witted, or that I am an overly emotional slob. I suspect that if I confronted these narrow-minded people, my words would have no effect. So, rather than using the attackers’ actions to beat myself up, I just prove them wrong. The camera gave me my voice. (via Pictures of people who mock me - Salon.com)
Go Haley! She’s my ceramics professor when I was at Memphis College of Art!

Featured Artist: Yao Xiao
Yao Xiao is an artist and illustrator based in New York City. Originally she is from Northern China but has also lived in Illinois, Seattle and Tennessee before she came to New York. Yao loves to tell stories through her work, is finishing up her BFA in Illustration at SVA and has already been published numerous times. Her work is very graphic, attractive and eye-catching so keep a look out for this blossoming, young illustrator.
A blog run by talented young artists gave me the honor to be a featured artist a few days ago. Thank you!! And I recommend checking out their work!
